Rodney Ellis was named the new chancellor of Southern University Shreveport on Friday by the Southern University Board of Supervisors.

Ellis, who is the school’s seventh-ever chancellor, is a higher-education consultant and the former chancellor of Central Louisiana Technical Community College. He also previously worked as the executive vice president at Atlanta Technical College.

Ellis bested three finalists selected by a 14 member search committee. He replaces former chancellor Ray Belton, who ascended to run the Southern University System last June.

“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Ellis who is a distinguished educator and administrator to the Southern University System family. His professional experience and knowledge along with his commitment to student achievement will align nicely with our mission and goals for our Shreveport campus,” Belton said in a statement.
