The Southern University Board of Supervisors Tuesday defeated an effort to declare a state of financial emergency on the flagship Baton Rouge campus.

The Southern Board voted 6-6 after faculty and students spoke out against approving such an emergency, called financial exigency.

The annual campus budget is due Tuesday afternoon to the Board of Regents.

Southern’s administration had hoped to get 90 percent of the faculty members to agree to take voluntary furloughs in order to balance the budget. About 60 percent of the faculty agreed. Other spending cuts will be necessary in order to match the amount of money available.
