Kira Orange Jones of New Orleans has formally announced plans to seek a second term on the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education.

“I know the challenges and heartbreaking statistics for students of color trying to compete on an educational playing field that is not level,” Jones said. “For our children and our society, we must provide an opportunity for an excellent education to every child. That has been and will continue to be my life’s mission.”

Jones is executive director of Teach For America in New Orleans.

BESE sets policies for about 720,000 public school students statewide.

Eight of 11 BESE members are picked by voters and three are named by the governor.

The primary is Oct. 24. The runoff is Nov. 21.

Jones’ represents District 2, which includes the east and west banks of New Orleans, the west bank of Jefferson Parish and St. Charles, St. John, St. James and Assumption parishes.
