Without discussion, the LSU Board of Supervisors approved Thursday the contracts for two newly hired assistant basketball coaches.

Tony Benford's contract calls for him to receive $325,000 per year, and Gregory Heiar will be paid $300,000 annually, according to LSU Board documents.

Benford and Heiar were the first two coaching hires for Will Wade, who was introduced as the LSU men’s basketball head coach on March 22.

Benford will get a three-year contract and Heiar's deal is for two years.

Benford, 53, is a former Texas Tech player, had been coach at North Texas in Denton, a suburb of Dallas. He was fired March 5 after an 8-22 season. He had worked previously at Marquette , a traditional basketball power, as well as at the New Mexico, Arizona State and Nebraska.

The 41-year-old Heiar is from Dubuque, Iowa, and was the top assistant at Wichita State, where he worked with the guards and helped lead the Shockers to 179 victories and six NCAA tournament bids — including a trip to the Final Four in 2013.
