The executive director of the Louisiana School Boards Association is on voluntary leave during an internal investigation of his office, officials said Thursday.

The LSBA represents about 650 local school board members statewide.

Nolton Senegal has been executive director of the group since 2007 and makes regular appearances before state legislative committees on education bills.

Russ Wise, a member of the LSBA board which is doing the probe, said Senegal’s leave has been in effect for a few weeks and that he is being paid.

Wise said the issue may be discussed when the 17-member board meets on Friday in Marksville.

“You can also say he is not the target of any particular investigation,” Wise said of Senegal.

Wise is a member of the St. John the Baptist Parish School Board.

Darrin Manuel of DeRidder, president of the state board, did not return calls for comment on Thursday.

Don Whittinghill, a consultant for the LSBA, said Thursday he understands that Senegal is on leave but did not know any details.

Senegal, also an attorney, could not be reached for comment.
