Washington – A gas leak forced the cancelation Tuesday of a scheduled speech by Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal to a conference on the 2010 Affordable Care Act, more popularly known as Obamacare.
The Obamacare at Five conference, sponsored by the conservative Washington Examiner news outlet, was planned for noon at 1200 17th St. NW. Many attendees had arrived and were savoring the complimentary ham, brie and fig-spread sandwiches, chocolate cookies and other food and soft drinks provided when a conference host announced the cancelation and evacuation of the building.
The leak occurred when a construction crew accidentally ruptured a gas line, a spokeswoman for Washington Gas said. The fire department responded and closed off streets in the area. Decisions on evacuations were the prerogative of the managers of individual buildings, possibly in consultation with the fire department, she said.
No make-up date for the conference has been announced.
