State Sen. Troy Brown, facing a misdemeanor domestic abuse battery charge, will give up the only leadership role he has in the state Senate.

Senate President John Alario said Thursday that Brown agreed to step down as vice chairman of the Senate Environmental Quality Committee until legal issues are resolved.

Alario said he discussed the matter with Brown. “It was a mutual agreement,” said Alario, R-Westwego.

Brown, D-Geismar, stands accused of punching his longtime girlfriend in the face Saturday night in a New Orleans hotel hours after the Bayou Classic football game. He said Monday he can’t remember major details of the alleged incident and is seeking medical help.

The 44-year-old Brown proposed the creation of a domestic violence commission in 2014,

Since the incident, questions have come up about whether he is a resident of the Sentate district he was just re-elected to represent.
