Dean Smith is leaving an academic position in Michigan to become dean of the LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans’ School of Public Health.

Smith, a professor and official at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, will start the job here June 1, LSU Health Chancellor Larry Hollier announced.

Smith will work through the spring with interim Dean Richard Culbertson.

Smith is Michigan’s director of executive education and lifelong learning and a professor in the Department of Health Management and Policy. He also is editor of the Journal of Health Administration Education.

He has a bachelor’s in economics from the University of Michigan and a doctorate in economics from Texas A&M University.

He joined the Michigan faculty to teach health care finance.
