House Republican Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana chose to attend a posh conference funded by the American Enterprise Institute instead of joining 50th-anniversary civil rights events in Selma, Ala., this month, according to a report at Politico.com.

Scalise came under scrutiny when it was reported that as a state legislator he spoke at a conference connected with Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke. After those reports, senior African-American lawmakers called on Scalise to attend the March events in Selma, which commemorated the voting rights protests there in 1965.

Scalise's office said a prior commitment kept him from Selma this year but taht he looks forward to attending events next year.
