President Barack Obama believes it’s ultimately up to the U.S. House leadership whether Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana should get to keep his seat following his admission that he spoke to a white nationalist group in 2002, according to reports Monday.

But White House press secretary Josh Earnest, who relayed the president’s views during a White House briefing, added that “there’s no arguing that who the Republicans decide to elevate into a leadership position says a lot about what the conference’s priorities and values are.”
