State Sen. Dan Claitor’s parents remained hospitalized Monday after an automobile wreck on Airline Highway near Siegen Lane.

Nancy Claitor, 80, and Robert Claitor, 88, were transported to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center after the collision on Saturday, State Police Troop A spokesman Jared Sandifer said Monday. Nancy Claitor was in serious condition and Robert Claitor suffered minor injuries, he said.

Claitor, a Baton Rouge Republican, participated in a Monday candidate forum. He said his mother would have wanted him to be there.

Sandifer said the crash happened about 12:30 p.m. Saturday on Airline Highway near Old Perkins Road close to the East Baton Rouge-Ascension Parish line.

“She was in the right hand lane of Highway 61 (Airline). There was a truck pulling a large trailer behind her in the left lane. She moved into the left lane in front of him trying to make a legal U-turn but she stopped. The truck rear-ended her vehicle,” Sandifer said.

The collision sent the Claitors’ 2013 Ford Explorer into the median, he said.

The driver of the 2005 Dodge Ram, Henry Johnson, 37, of Prairieville, refused medical treatment, Sandifer said.

The accident is under investigation, he said.
