Citing a need to improve parish infrastructure and promote responsible growth and fiscal accountability, Barry Hugghins announced he is running for the West Baton Rouge Parish Council District 8 seat.

Hugghins, 58, said his education and business experience have given him a strong foundation to pursue public office.

“I’m concerned about our children’s futures and want them to have the same quality of life that we have enjoyed,” Hugghins said. “I feel that I have the background and experience to be an effective voice for the people of District 8.”

Hugghins, not affiliated with any party, said he will support the parish’s fire departments, recreation programs and the Sheriff’s Office if elected.

Hugghins, 58, lives in Erwinville and is the founder and operator of Reliant Technologies, Inc., a manufacturer of lubricants and drilling fluid additives that has operating in Port Allen for 26 years.

Hugghins has a degree in psychology from the University of Texas in Tyler and degrees in chemistry and chemical engineering from LSU.

He is married to Patricia Hugghins and has lived in the Erwinville area for more than 18 years. The couple has four children and four grandchildren.

He attends Sharon Baptist Church in Erwinville where he serves as a deacon.

“I look forward to the opportunity to serve the citizens of District 8 as their voice in West Baton Rouge Parish,” he said. “I am genuinely interested in knowing and responding to the people’s concerns.

Also running for the District 8 seat are incumbent Alethea “Lisa Green” Johnson and Larry Knapps, both Democrats.

District 8 includes the Erwinville area of West Baton Rouge Parish.
