State Rep. Steve Carter was re-elected to the District 68 seat Saturday, avoiding a run-off.

The Republican won with 55 percent of the vote.

He defeated Patty Merrick, a Democrat who had 26 percent of the vote, and Robert Cade Cipriano, a Republican who won 19 percent.

Carter has spent the last four years as the chairman for the House Education Committee and has taken the lead on controversial educational issues, including Common Core, public school overhauls like limiting teacher tenure protections, expanding charter schools and programs, and allowing public dollars to be used for private tuition vouchers.
