A candidate for East Baton Rouge Parish School Board said someone drove up behind the store he manages on Florida Boulevard on Thursday morning, broke a lock and drove off with a trailer on which he displayed campaign signs.

Daniel Banguel said he learned of the theft soon after he started his morning shift at Rent-A-Wheel, 8345 Florida Blvd.

A Baton Rouge police officer came out soon after to investigate and watched a surveillance tape to see whether it recorded the theft.

Banguel said he borrowed the trailer, which he valued at $7,200, from a cousin and began using it a few days ago as a mobile billboard.

He said he thinks the theft happened mid- to late morning but could have occurred overnight.

His campaign manager, Sarah Holliday, said the campaign has been parking the trailer behind the store the past few days, using it last night at an event at the public library on Greenwell Springs Road.

Banguel is running against incumbent Verata Lee in the District 2 School Board race.
