LAFAYETTE — House District 45 pits Libertarian W. David Chance against incumbent Rep. Joel Robideaux, who is seeking a final term in the state House of Representatives.

Chance did not return multiple phone calls to a phone number listed with his qualifying papers filed with the Louisiana Secretary of State’s Office, nor did he return a message to his Facebook account. A website believed to be Chance’s also states the site is not complete.

Robideaux was elected speaker pro tempore of the House by his colleagues in March 2010, according to his campaign website. If elected, Robideaux said, he again would seek to become speaker of the House.

Robideaux said more economic growth could be created in Louisiana if the state focused on making itself more business friendly.

Robideaux said he would not favor any tax increases.

Instead, reducing the government workforce and pension reform could help balance the state’s budget in the face of revenue declines, Robideaux said in an email.

Robideaux said he is in favor of spending cuts.

“When I was elected 8 years ago, the budget was $16 billion,” Robideaux wrote. “It’s now around $25 billion. Let’s start by looking at areas where the increases exist.”

Robideaux said he considers a fee increase the same as a tax only “when it’s applied to all citizens.”

Improving the state’s education system by making it more results-oriented is a key factor to addressing, Robideaux said.

The candidate cited a “fiscally sound government” as the single greatest need for his district.
