LAFAYETTE — No tax or fee increases should be passed onto voters until the state improves its budget management, said unopposed state Sen. Jonathan Perry of Kaplan.

“I don’t think the state has proven that it can responsibly do well with its current budget so I’m not in favor of giving them more,” Perry said.

Perry doesn’t support the use of one-time funding to plug holes in the budget, he said. Rather than cut state department funding or services, Perry said savings could be generated by the elimination of state jobs through attrition.

“We can’t get to a point where you’re running on a skeleton crew, but I think there are elements of state agencies that can be trimmed down through attrition,” he said.

Perry began his first term in the Legislature in 2008 as a representative. In February, he won the Senate District 26 seat in a special election to replace Nick Gautreaux, who vacated the seat for a job as the commissioner of the state Office of Motor Vehicles.

The state should limit taxation and focus on existing and small business owners to grow the state’s economy, he said.

“I think there definitely needs to be more of a concentration on existing businesses — the mom-and-pop stores,” Perry said.

Senate Dist. 26 includes all of Vermilion Parish and parts of Acadia, Lafayette and St. Landry parishes.

The overwhelming need in the district is for improved roads, Perry said.

“When I ran four years ago for representative, in every poll we did the number one issue was roads by far,” he said. “Fast forward four years … the number one issue above jobs even was roads. The reason is it’s tangible. You see it. You feel it.”
