The Louisiana Senate on Monday endorsed making the mayhaw tree the official state fruit tree.

The Senate voted 38-0 for the measure http://www.legis.la.gov/legis/ViewDocument.aspx?d=881704&n=SB206%20Engrossed">Senate Bill 206 sponsored by state Sen. John Smith, R-Leesville.

Smith said the state does not have an official state fruit tree. “This bill would correct that,” he said.

“You all know how coveted mayhaw jelly is. You might even get some out of this bill,” Smith said.

The bill was the second taken up for Senate action in the 2014 Legislature.

It now moves to the Louisiana House for consideration.
