Legislation to ban minors from tanning beds sailed through the Louisiana House Wednesday afternoon.
State Rep. Helena Moreno, D-New Orleans, said she filed House Bill 746 after dermatologists drove home to her the danger of tanning beds. She said the beds increase the risk of melanoma cancer and cause more damage than sunlight.
“This is a cancer prevention bill,” she said.
HB746 would ban anyone under 18 from using tanning equipment that emits ultraviolet light. Currently, teens 14 to 18 can use tanning beds with parental permission.
The House voted 97-1 in favor of sending the bill to the state Senate.
