The Louisiana House gave final legislative approval Thursday a bill that would create a new designation for colleges that provide extra support for student veterans.
The House agreed to a minor Senate change and shipped it to Gov. Bobby Jindal’s desk for signing into law.
Under House Bill 485, colleges and universities will be able to apply annually to the state Board of Regents to receive the “Governor’s Veterans Friendly Campus Designation.”
“This gives the vets seal of approval for our colleges,” the bill’s sponsor state Rep. Henry Burns, R-Haughton, said.
The special designation program is designed to encourage schools to help veterans transition into their new roles as students.
To earn the VETS Campus designation, schools would have to create special orientation and recruitment programs tailored to veterans, as well as workshops, policies and other support services.
