Rep. Erich Ponti won’t seek re-election to Louisiana House _lowres

Baton Rouge state Rep. Erich Ponti said Tuesday he won’t run for re-election to the Louisiana House this fall.

Ponti also said he’s not running for any other office.

Ponti made his decision public in a speech to House colleagues.

“I never intended to run for a political office or be in politics,” Ponti said later. “I became involved in church and in the building community and ran to make a difference.

“About six or seven months ago my heart and mind said ‘I’ve done my time and it’s time to enjoy life’,” said Ponti.

The Republican is nearing the end of of his second term representing the south Baton Rouge based House District 69. He is currently chairman of the House Commerce Committee.

Ponti could have sought a third term under state law.

Ponti said he was announcing his decision now to give people in the district time to decide whether they want to run.
