Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development Secretary Shawn Wilson gathered Monday on the State Capitol steps with legislators, law enforcement and other officials to emphasize the importance of driver awareness and the perils of distracted driving, particularly where vehicles get close to the workers who are repairing or expanding roadways.
Thirteen road workers were killed in Louisiana during 2014.
“What I find deeply troubling is that each of these fatalities and injuries was preventable,” Wilson said.
They were bringing attention to Work Zone Awareness Week, April 11-15.
“We believe this effort will help reduce the number of injuries and fatalities that occur on Louisiana’s roadways,” Wilson said.
