Transit authority boards in New Orleans, Baton Rouge and the River Parishes would be required to get six hours of annual training under a bill that cleared a House panel Thursday.

House Speaker Pro-tem Walt Leger, D-New Orleans, said the volunteer members of the board “take on a very serious job.” He said the training would give board members “a better opportunity to fulfill their role to the public.”

“We want to make sure we get the best practices across-the-board,” Leger said.

The Municipal Parochial and Cultural Affairs Committee approved a rewrite of House Bill 955 and sent it to the House floor for debate.

Similar Senate legislation is sponsored by state Sen. Sharon Broome, D-Baton Rouge.
