Louisiana senators on Wednesday honored Sen. John Alario, who has served as the chamber’s president since 2012.

Praising Alario for his leadership in the chamber, Sen. Sharon Broome, a Baton Rouge Democrat who serves as the chamber’s president pro tempore, and others presented Alario with a portrait in a gold frame.

Alario has been in the Legislature since 1972 — first serving in the House.

“I cannot tell you how much of an honor it has been to work with you and among you for the betterment of this state,” the Westwego Republican told the chamber.
