“Simple” rape isn’t simple, so the Louisiana Senate agreed to a name change for the crime.

Simple rape would become “third offense” rape in state criminal statutes.

“When you call something ‘simple rape,’ it doesn’t give it the same gravitas,” said Sen. J.P. Morrell, D-New Orleans.

Under House Bill 139, aggravated rape would become “first degree” and forcible rape “second degree.”

The Senate voted 38-0 for the measure after amending it to insure that those convicted of any of the crimes would still have to register as a sex offender.

The bill, sponsored by state Rep. Valarie Hodges, R-Denham Springs, returns to the House for concurrence in Senate changes.
