Medical marijuana is closer to becoming a reality in Louisiana, as the Louisiana Legislature has fully signed off on measures to expand the list of illnesses that qualify for the treatment.
Senate Bill 271 has been approved by both the House and the Senate. And on Monday, the Senate signed off on the final amendments. That means all that’s left for the bill to become law is for Gov. John Bel Edwards to sign off on it. He has previously indicated that he is willing to do so.
The bill expands the number of illnesses eligible for the treatment from beyond just the three that are currently in law. Notably, it also changes the method doctors would assign the drug to patients from “prescribe” to “recommend,” which was a change legally necessary to get around the federal prohibition of prescribing marijuana.
