Home-based bakers who sell their breads, pies and other goods to the public will be exempt from some state licensing standards, if Gov. Bobby Jindal agrees.
The Senate gave final passage to House Bill 775 Tuesday with a 32-0 vote.
The measure by Republican Rep. Scott Simon, of Abita Springs, broadens a law passed last year giving an exemption to sanitation rules that require commercial grade equipment to people who sell cakes and cookies they bake at home.
The expanded exemption will apply to home-based food makers who prepare baked goods, candies, honey, jams and jellies, pickles, sauces, syrups and spices — if their gross annual sales are less than $20,000.
They will be required to follow a list of sanitation requirements.
