Motorists could soon see Louisiana French on road signs when they are traveling across the state.

The state Legislature gave final approval to House Bill 998, which allows parishes to determine whether bilingual signage is necessary, and shipped the bill to Gov. Bobby Jindal.

Parishes would be able to request signs along state and federal highways within their boundaries be bilingual and display terms in both English and Louisiana French.

HB998 also would give the Council for the Development of French in Louisiana the authority to provide and approve Louisiana French terms for the bilingual language signage.
