Members of the state’s college management boards may soon be required to disclose who they award scholarships to after state senators passed Senate Bill 31 on Tuesday.

SB31 sponsor, state Sen. Dan Claitor, R-Baton Rouge, has estimated that board members overseeing the LSU and Southern University systems have more than 180 scholarships at their disposal ever year valued at more than $1 million annually. He has said board members are appointed by the governor and should behave in a transparent manner.

“It just seems like this ought to be something we know about,” Claitor said.

The bill passed on a 37-0 vote. It now heads to Gov. Bobby Jindal’s desk.
