A proposed consolidation of the Municipal and Traffic Courts of New Orleans is on its way to Gov. Bobby Jindal.
The Louisiana Legislature gave final legislative passage Monday to a measure that for now keeps the eight judges in the courts.
Under a compromise, a task force will make a recommendation related to the reduction in judges through attrition. The task force must submit a report of its findings and recommendations 30 days prior to the start of the 2015 legislative session.
House Bill 1206 originally would have cut the judges from eight to six which became a sticking point in the Senate.
“The consolidation does not eliminate the judges,” said bill sponsor House Speaker Pro-tem Walt Leger, D-New Orleans.
The House agreed to the revised bill on an 87-0 vote. The Senate concurred 30-0.
