A plan to set up a new school district in southeast Baton Rouge will be debated in the state Senate on Tuesday, officials said Wednesday afternoon.

The package includes two bills.

One is a change in state law, which is Senate Bill 199. The other is a constitutional amendment which will be submitted to voters if it wins legislative approval.

It is Senate Bill 73.

Both bills require two-thirds approval in the Legislature and, if that happens, majority approval statewide and in the East Baton Rouge Parish School District.

Backers contend the change is justified because the area is riddled with schools rated C, D and F by the state.

Opponents argue that the new district would damage the East Baton Rouge Parish school system.
