It’s taking an act of the Legislature, but Louisiana is working on its French-Cajun spelling.

The state Senate signed off on legislation Thursday to correct the spelling of a portion of La. 741 between La. 31 and U.S. 190 in St. Landry Parish.

House Bill 762 has already passed the House and is now heading to Gov. Bobby Jindal for approval.

Currently named the “Hadley J. Castille-Pecanaire Highway,” HB762 seeks to tweak the spelling to rename the roadway the “Hadley J. Castille-Pacanière Highway.”

“The experts have finally agreed that Pecanaire should be spelled ‘P-A-C-A-N-I-E with an accent-R-E,’” said state Sen. Elbert Guillory, R-Opelousas.
