Weather sometimes takes the blame for seasonal colds. My grandfather believed in this philosophy and placed a bowl of apples, onions, and garlic, laced with whiskey, on his nightstand when he experienced chest congestion. Mom would send us to school with Vick’s Vapo-Rub piled on our chest and throat, preventing me from getting a “date.” Another application was called a “mustard plaster.” This concoction included: three tablespoons of flour, a teaspoon of baking soda, three tablespoons of dried mustard and a tablespoon of shortening, butter, lard or Oleo. Mix this with hot water, smear the Vaseline on your chest; load it into a piece of muslin or flannelette. I’ve tried this application and each time was asked to remove myself from the bedroom.
