The coaching change at Michigan prompted recollections of another coaching change in 1950.

The game against Ohio State on Nov. 25, 1950, was during the worst snowstorm to hit Ohio since 1913. Mike Sause and his brother Kit attended the game with their dad and brother Bill.

Mike noted, “We wore so much clothing we couldn’t move!”

The game-time temperature was 10 above, accompanied by 28-mph winds. Snow removal couldn’t prevent 6-foot end zone drifts.

Michigan won 9 to 3 without making a first down. Ohio State coach Wes Fesler resigned after the game and relocated to Florida. Woody Hayes was his replacement.

Ironically, Kit and Mike couldn’t see the field and fell asleep. Both experienced frost bitten thumbs, which complicates their golf game to this day.
