Heavy rain, storms capable of hail, lightning expected Wednesday in south Louisiana _lowres

Heavy rain is persisting in the New Orleans area, which is under a flood advisory until 12:15 p.m.

Update, 8:30 a.m. Several schools in St. John the Baptist, St. Charles and St. James parishes have canceled or delayed classes. See the full closings list here.

Update, 6:30 a.m.: Tornado warning issued for St. John the Baptist and Assumption parishes until 6:45 a.m.

The National Weather Service received reports of estimated golf ball-sized hail in Labadieville around 6:10 a.m.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms will move through south Louisiana Wednesday.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected through Wednesday night. Many of these will be strong and capable of producing small hail, the National Weather Service said.

There’s a possibility that a few storms could become severe along and south of the Interstate 10/12 corridor.

The main threat will be large hail, damaging winds and lightning, the Weather Service said.
