Our initial Little League baseball season began with a “tryout.” Kids, with gloves in hand, played “catch” and also displayed a numbered sign, pinned to the back of their sweatshirt.
Some were “grandfathered” into a team from an older brother who previously played for that team.
The league included: Elks, Moose, Kiwanis, Lions, American Legion and Rotary.
Our brothers Denis and Mike were Elks regulars, but Donnie Huffman broke the cycle insisting that Kevin and I join the Rotary.
All aspects of the game were practiced, and a practice ending shower initiated “sliding” practice. Hook slides, hand slides and the safety of “leg-tuck” slides were taught.
Mom wasn’t pleased with the muddied, grass stained “jeans” that came in the back door.
