tropics tuesday

Forecasters on Tuesday were continuing to monitor a broad area of low pressure in the southwestern Caribbean Sea.

The disturbance has a 50 percent chance of developing into a tropical system over the next five days, according to the National Hurricane Center. Its close proximity to land could limit development of the system for the next day or two, but environmental conditions are then "expected to be conducive for some development" as it moves north over the Caribbean Sea, the NHC said at 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Its chance of development over the next 48 hours is low, at 10 percent, the NHC said.
