Kleinpeter Farms Dairy offers us another “cool” option during the August heat with its various flavors of ice cream. A cold, homemade milkshake is another “cooler.” Milk also provides a valuable source of vitamin D, the vitamin also known as the “sunshine vitamin.” As noted in a previous column, playing outdoors a few times a week gives kids enough vitamin D, but medical experts verify that 70 percent of children and adolescents in the U.S. don’t get enough of it. Sample blood tests found 58.4 million have inadequate levels. The report notes kids are spending more time indoors playing video games, watching television, using sunscreen and drinking less milk. The deficiency of vitamin D could increase the risk of brittle bones and heart disease.
