Free admission is offered this year for the Feliciana Nature Society’s annual Feliciana Hummingbird Celebration on Friday and Saturday in and around St. Francisville.
The event promotes the unique breeding habitat found in the St. Francisville area.
The celebration begins with a 6 p.m. reception Friday at Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site, 12501 La. 10. Visitors may enjoy wine and cheese while strolling the Rosedown gardens, and at 6:45 p.m. landscape architect professor Charles Fryling of LSU will speak on attracting birds to Southern gardens.
On Saturday, visitors may watch hummingbird biologists Linda Beall and Nancy Newfield capture, weigh and band hummingbirds from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at two gardens in the St. Francisville area, the National Wild Bird Refuge, 15736 Tunica Trace, and at Murrell Butler’s home, 9485 Oak Hill Road.
Vendors also will be at both homes to sell plants that attract hummingbirds.

Art exhibit, reception
An art exhibit and reception honoring abstract artist Irma Alexander, of Baton Rouge, will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Heritage Museum and Cultural Center, 1606 Main St., Baker.
The public is invited.
Blood drive at Lane
United Blood Services will hold a blood drive from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday at Lane Regional Medical Center in Zachary.
The blood drive is open to the public, and registration is not required.
Free prenatal class
Lane Regional Medical Center will offer a free prenatal class at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Staff Development Classroom.
“The Pregnancy Workshop” is an overview of what to expect for the soon-to-be mom. Partners are welcome to attend.

Among the 3,653 post offices across the country that could be closed in a new round of U.S. Postal Service budget-cutting are the Tunica and Weyanoke post offices in rural West Feliciana Parish. No East Feliciana post offices are on the list.
Lyrical trumpet concert
Indiana University senior Philip Hembree, of Zachary, will present a free concert of lyrical songs at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Plains Presbyterian Church.
The concert is free and open to the public.
Friends of West Feliciana Parish sheriff’s Capt. Michael Taylor, a cancer patient, are organizing a “Country Fair for a Country Boy” all day on Aug. 6 at the Elm Park Rodeo Arena.
The benefit includes a rodeo, trail ride, lunch, food, music and children’s activities.
