“Creed.” “Straight Outta Compton.” “Concussion.”

Where are these movies, movies with racially mixed casts and superb acting? For the second year in a row, the Academy has bungled it again, leaving minorities laughably underrepresented at the Oscars.

It’s not like there were limited options for great movies (such as the ones I named above). So why wasn’t at least one chosen? As an African-American myself, this is extremely frustrating. In my eyes, these repeated snubs send a clear message to minorities in the film industry that their work is not appreciated.

How can this be permitted? I almost wonder if an oversight on such a great scale (especially after two years) is intentional. The Academy’s president has claimed to revamp attempts for diversity, but I simply don’t see that happening.

Hopefully, the future will bring more change. After the nominations came out, several stars such as Jada Pinkett Smith and Spike Lee have decided to boycott the show. Though I have enjoyed the Oscars in the past, this year, I will not be watching.
