Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden and other proponents of the Baton Rouge loop refuse to give up the ghost and evidently relish the thought of wasting taxpayers’ money studying a proposal that will not materialize. Three (Ascension, Livingston and Iberville) of the five parish presidents affected by the proposed loop resigned from the Capital Area Expressway Authority over the issue. Most elected officials in these three parishes are opposed to the loop. For these reasons, no governor or state Legislature will support it further.
The state has moved forward with traffic improvements by adding lanes on both Interstate 10 and Interstate 12. Meanwhile, Baton Rouge business owners and elected officials ironically oppose traffic improvements such as adding lanes on I-10 between the new bridge and the I-10/I-12 split and now a proposed inner loop. Apparently, the only traffic relief East Baton Rouge business owners and elected officials will support are those that affect quality of life and business in adjacent parishes and not in theirs.
