It is hard to imagine a more critical time in Louisiana’s history, with so much hanging in the balance. This week, with the passage of House Bill 1, the House of Representatives showed all of Louisiana what real leadership looks like.

Speaker Chuck Kleckley and chairmen Jim Fannin and Joel Robideaux navigated a solution that was as complex politically as it was mathematically, and we applaud them. We now look to the Senate for the same kind of leadership, and we are confident that they will complete the remedy.

The University of Louisiana System produces over 17,000 graduates every year, and this funding is critical to our strategic plans to significantly increase production — particularly in areas of workforce demand, including engineering, computer science and accounting. The presidents of our nine universities are eager to implement plans that will benefit so many.

On behalf of our board, our university communities and our 90,000 students throughout Louisiana, we thank our House members for coming through for higher education when it mattered most.
