Upon reading “New Heroes Emerge” by Ross Dellenger, it occurred to me that this society has trouble with the word “heroes.”

The air show was in town recently, an event teeming with war heroes.

How can we in good conscience call the LSU football team heroes when we know these real-life war heroes are in our midst? When did the definition for hero become “to perform well in sports?”

In his speech at the air show, Col. Richard Cole refused to call himself a hero, saying that it was the men he worked alongside who deserved the title. It is offensive to speak of a college football team as a group of heroes when mere miles away, there stands a group of men who fought in World War II. They are quite literally heroes.
