We celebrate with U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise as he takes on the role of Majority Whip in the House of Representatives. We eagerly look to Rep. Scalise joining Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy to lead House Republicans on passing immigration reform this year, consistent with the desires of a majority of Americans. Reform is urgently needed to fix our broken system and flawed leadership in Washington that is hurting our economy, our families and society. Sound, comprehensive immigration reform will tighten border security, adjust the flow of labor based on market needs rather than arbitrary visa restrictions and provide a pathway to earned citizenship, not one freely handed out. This way, we will effectively cut down illegal immigration and provide more opportunities for legal entry for those looking to make a better life for themselves and their children here in America. After all, isn’t that what our immigrant ancestors had wanted and pursued?
As an immigrant myself, and also a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and an Army veteran who served during Vietnam, it concerns me deeply to see what is happening to our country, a beacon of hope in this planet and a country made of immigrants. Please, let’s not lose what made us great.
