I am very concerned about the future of behavioral health treatment in Louisiana. Funding for community-based and hospital treatment has been cut by tens of millions for the past eight years. We are paying the price in our ERs and jails, as well as the ultimate cost of lives from suicides and overdoses because of these cuts.

Mental illness and addiction are very treatable illnesses. I can not imagine a society that would walk by someone having a heart attack, turn their back and laugh. Yet this is the way we treat individuals who have mental illness and addiction every day.

All lives are important, and all individuals deserve treatment when they are ill.

Where is our humanity, Louisiana?
