The League of Women Voters of St. Tammany encourages St. Tammany voters to support Parish Home Rule Charter Amendment No. 5. This amendment gives the Parish Council and president the ability to select its own legal counsel. This change to the Parish Home Rule Charter echoes a position that the League has held since 2010 that neither the Parish Council nor the parish president be required to use the District Attorney’s Office. This position, which was adopted by consensus in 2010, is among several concerning the charter that have been in our program for many years.

The League is pleased that the Charter Committee and the parish president and Parish Council have agreed to be independent in their choice of legal counsel. We are confident that the District Attorney’s Office and the parish government will interact amicably if the proposed charter change passes in Saturday’s election.

The League of Women Voters of St. Tammany is a nonpartisan political organization that does not support or oppose candidates. We study issues and adopt positions on those issues by consensus or concurrence. They then become part of our action program.

Membership in the LWVST is open to men and women.
