In July 2008, then-Sen.Barak Obama on the campaign trail said, “The way Bush has done it over the last eight years is to take out a credit card from the Bank of China in the name of our children, driving up our national debt from $5 trillion from the first 42 presidents — number 43 added $4 trillion by his lonesome; so that we now have over $9 trillion of debt that we are going to have to pay back — $30,000 for every man, woman and child. That’s irresponsible! It’s unpatriotic!”
But as president, this man has doubled down on his own definitions, hitting the credit card for nearly $6 trillion additional in only four years.
His presidential strategy of bestowing goodies (the stimulus package and bailouts) on political friends, shoring up the “base” by vastly expanding entitlements (buying votes?), and significantly increasing the size of the federal government (“fundamentally transforming the United States of America”) simply did not “fit” with his earlier concern.
