In response to Elizabeth Powers’ letter which expressed concern the pellet industry may be “clear cutting Southern hardwood forests,’’ we are pleased to assure her that is not the case. Drax pellet plants use trees from thinnings, tree tops, limbs and other low-grade wood, together with sawmill residues predominantly from plantation-grown pine. In that respect, the raw material and sustainable forest management that supports it is no different to existing, well-respected, forest industry practice. Forests across the southeastern U.S. are growing thanks to sustainable forest management over many years. Drax and its fiber suppliers remain firmly committed to responsible forestry which protects biodiversity and promotes forest growth.
