The Walter Isaacson commentary was very good and very interesting as Isaacson’s writings always are. But it was an us-vs.-them argument disguised as thoughtful analysis.

The unavoidable conclusion is that these historic monuments should be torn down because they were put up for “them” and not “us.” The city of New Orleans has been governing by them vs. us since 1876, and it has gotten us nowhere. Instead of diversity, we will have a sanitized city. We will no longer be interesting but shall be as plain as the other cities that have utilized us vs. them to tear down their history. These other cities don’t have the tourism New Orleans has, so they won’t lose anything. Once more, us vs. them will have achieved nothing.
