On Nov. 4, voters will decide whether to adopt an amendment to the state constitution that removes the mandatory retirement age for Louisiana judges.

All workers should be judged on their skills and abilities, not their age. No worker deserves to be ousted from their job, passed over for a promotion or deprived of access to opportunities because they are older.

Recently, AARP commissioned a study that found nearly 2 of every 3 Louisiana workers had either seen or experienced age discrimination in the workplace. Unfortunately, almost 20 percent of those surveyed said that they weren’t hired for a job due to their age and nearly 10 percent told us they had been laid off or fired because of their age.

Please support Constitutional Amendment No. 5 to protect every American’s right to work, no matter how old they are.

Our hope is that nobody ever has to hear the words, “You’re too old — and you’re fired.”
