I applaud Ed Ruzicka’s recent letter to the editor, "Time to hold Congress accountable." I too have never been more concerned about the future of American democracy. We now have a president who took an oath of office to uphold the Constitution of the United States and protect us from our nation’s enemies from within and outside of our country. President Donald Trump has continually broken his constitutional oath on both accounts, and we have a complicit congress that is constitutionally supposed to be the country’s executive branch watchdog that has been turned into its lapdog.
There’s nobody in the Louisiana congressional delegation more responsible for this sad and dangerous situation than Trump’s “Louisiana Legend” — House Majority Whip Steve Scalise. Scalise has been one of Trump’s most enthusiastic sycophants in the House of Representatives. He has whipped up the necessary House Republican votes to thwart any meaningful legislation to stop Russian illegal meddling in future American elections. If, as the president has continually asserted, you still don’t believe in Russia’s meddling in our 2016 presidential elections, please read the 13-point U.S. indictment against the many Russians who orchestrated and directed the very sophisticated operation to interfere in the 2016 presidential elections.
Russia doesn’t really favor the Republicans or the Democrats. Its goal is to weaken American democracy and influence around the world, and sow discord and misinformation among our citizens, and in that, Russian intelligence efforts have been very successful. For the future of American democracy, I hope Scalise starts putting country above party in his U.S. House of Representatives leadership position.
